ID Magazine asked the emerging design group Surtido to rethink everyday objects for the article Uncommon Goods by Monica Khemsurov. Fortunately, Subbuteo’s Chair has been chosen to appear on the issue.
Barcelona designer Marc Ligos’s mini chair-leg toy looks like fun, but it has an ominous subtext. It’s inspired by Spanish philosopher Vincente Verdú’s writings on the “endless entertainment society,” in which leisure has supplanted religion as a tool to subdue the masses. “Give a static everyday object like a chair the capacity to be played with,” Ligos explains, “and it lets you keep playing whenever you want so you can forget your existential problems. When we’re happy, we consume more.”
